Very well written piece. The problem, in my opinion, is that in the fight for true equality, the well-meaning embattled often end up demanding far more that that, ie, protected class status, which in the end, breeds anger and resentment from the broader society at large.

I generally hate right wingers the most precisely because they are 100% incapable of this.

Well it may also be what you specifically do. I’m a consultant, I don’t work at these companies. Once a relationship is formed, these guys will often really open up with me because it’s not something they can usually do.

If you lived in my world, and wanted to fight every racist you came across, you’d be dead by 35. And I don’t “hang around” or befriend racists and bigots and so on, but being around them is unavoidable.

Well I can tell you I don’t specialize in an industry, I work with pretty much all of them. Keep in mind, when I say a few beers, I don’t mean at a work function or networking event, I mean when I’m getting them drunk while we’re golfing or at a bar or what have you.

I’ve been playing ice hockey my whole life, and have many hockey friends. Almost to man they are proud racists. It’s such a given that it’s usually not worth the effort of fighting, but there have been several cases where I’ve blown and gone off on them.
