I often pull the pen shaped peeler, and find that it gives me the more control than either pushing or using a Y-shaped one. You hook the thumb at the bottom of the vegetable, hold the peeler with the other fingers, and (carefully) draw it toward the thumb. Downside: you could nick your finger if not careful.
