I do this too, but have found that when you take your shoes off in front of guests after letting them in, many of them tend to do the same without being asked. This doesn’t always happen, but it will drastically decrease the number of shoes on your floor.

I always try to touch only the very top of the door when possible. I know this isn’t perfect, but if I have to put my hand somewhere, I will put is somewhere only a portion of people can reach, and only a portion of them will use. (Most importantly, most kids are not included in that group)
