The only rational characters in Alien are Parker, who consistently and comedically calls for them to "freeze it," and Ripley, who refuses to let the contaminated Kane on to the ship (and even she risks her life for the damn cat).

I loved the visuals, the score/sound (in IMAX, holy crap!), I liked the tension, I liked the ragtag group of characters as a callback to the Nostromo crew, I liked the mythological nuggets dropped everywhere and I liked the crazy theories and explanations that it spawned. I am by no means suggesting that Prometheus is better than Alien, I just think that many of the Prometheus critiques that people were pooping themselves over are either also critiques of the original film or explained/mitigated by closely watching Alien.
