That’s why I leave a pocket. It’s called room for error. Better to be rear ended and thrown in to empty space than in to a tailgate.

Just because US drivers are incompetent doesn’t mean you should wait for the texting jackass behind you to crunch you between him(or her) and the car in front of you. Between cars is often safer, but don’t be an idiot about it.
It’s legal in California. This site is geared towards motorcyclists but the law is similar.
