You have your quarterback or best athlete run backwards, not throw the ball and risk intentional grounding (I know the rule was misapplied) or worse and interception. You run backwards until the clock says 0. You do not throw the ball.

Look at the Michigan game last year. And another college game had this same mistake happen. Granted that is on the refs, but it is not complicated to know what you should do with 1-10 seconds left. You snap the ball to you quarterback or running back and have them run backwards for the remaining time.
