I think the OG run of Law and Order had few episodes just like this. One, IIRC, ended horrifically with the Russian mob wiping out the witness’ mother and nearly the witness themselves (a small child).

More wonderful news for today: SCOTUS is waffling on striking down the POTUS immunity nonsense.
