Yeah, I raised an eyebrow at that too. Of the six covers this year, 3 feature black women. So, 50% representation for black women, who do not make up 50% of the female population. So that is in fact trailblazing, since it’s the opposite of what usually occurs. It’s actually an OVER-representation of black women. And a

I’m waiting to see the unretouched photos to see how sexist our scientific media is.

Does that not count?

I was wondering the same thing about Bella Hadid. She’s half Jordanian. And yes it’s a minefield.

The irony.

Yeah, I wondered about that myself. Also, using that criteria, why exclude Bella Hadid? Her dad is a Jordanian-American who was born in Nazareth.

Most look about as white as the Jezebel staff

Honest question- Bella Hadid is Middle Eastern, no?

I am well aware of the campaign against Rachel. Almost all of it originates with Gaye Dalton, who in case you’re unaware, conducts herself as would a stalker on twitter, constantly harassing Rachel or anyone who dares to mention her. But let’s assume Rachel is a mustache twirling, villainous fraud. ...How about the

Actually from what I found it’s a fine and that fine is bumped up if you continue the violation. I think that is fair. You can’t just let the sex industry be the wild west. You can’t just let people get and spread diseases and look the other way. That is for both the business owner and the client. The licenses could

You know, every time I read an article about sex work somebody has to say “listen to sex workers”...as if that is a single and unified opinion? Rachel Moran, who wrote her book endorsing the Nordic model, was a former sex worker. I live in Canada, and all of the First Nations women’s advocates I’ve heard from — some

Projecting malice or thoughtlessness on allies who earnestly aim to solve the same problem you do out of the same sense of compassion you have but who are mistaken or slightly disagree with you, is a dick move. This is a complicated issue with no clear single solution, so stop pretending that it is.

So when feminists and Amnesty International itself were promoting the exact same approach Carter is until just recently, were they also “using [their] platform to help sex workers into an early grave?” Or do you just want to take the opportunity to shit him? Are the feminists and sex workers who’ve agreed with him at

Hardly that long ago. And it’s still very common in some circles. Get out of your bubble.

People do understand that. The issue is that it seems like a near impossible reality to separate legal sex work from all the seedy crime that follows it.

That’s a better way to put it. Either way, this is really unfairly written, which is disappointing because Anna is usually such a conscientious writer;

This is a very complicated issue that won’t be fixed just by legalizing it. I actually agree with him that legal prostitution commodifies women’s bodies (and to a smaller extent, men’s bodies) and that’s not ok with this feminist.

This is why we can’t have nice things. Because people who disagree on a hugely contested complicated issue are “awful” people who write “bad” things.

This was the traditional feminist line not that long ago, so it doesn’t surprise me.

Everything he’s saying applies to sex workers who are trafficked, coerced, or forced by desperate circumstances into an industry they don’t really want to be in, but it doesn’t apply to sex workers who are working safely, legally and by choice. To be fair to President Carter, there are more in the first category.
