Oh the online reaction has been fantastic. Men and women are saying things like “This ho is probably disappointed that she wanted a gang bang with 50 guys and only got 30", and the good old “She is lying for publicity” (She is minor so her name is not released, so... what publicity?), and “This is a ploy by feminazis”

No, there are different protests.

As a Brazilian, it’s such a relief to read comments such as these. The world knows the truth. We didn’t want the World Cup; we didn’t want the Olympics; we didn’t want Temer as our president. These are very, VERY dark times for us.

Since I can’t no longer edit my original comment, I’m replying to myself to add a bit that I had not noticed earlier: on Mrs. Lutkin’s article it says:

Mrs. Lutkin, as a follow up to my other comment on this article, I’ll post about an incident that I think it’s kind of relevant, and shows the prevalence of the culture of misogyny, here in Brazil, and its connection with right-wing politics. In the end, I’ll post the link to a few Brazilian news articles on it and,

I’m sorry, but I disagree. In those examples you listed, I see the main motivation being threat. It’s rarely killing them because you literally do not see them as human. It’s the difference between killing them by setting some random male stranger on fire for shits and giggles, and well, this story. Imagine they

You are right. Men are more likely to be victims of physical violence and homicide. The problem is they are also the majority of the perpetrators. Because we have a world-wide culture that celebrates violence in men, but decries the same violent tendencies in women. Very few cultures do not do this.

You’re welcome. And no, not to my knowledge... That’s sadly explainable by the fact that in our “macho” culture, all the indignation is towards enforcing vengeance and punishment over the rapists, while not much care is given to the victim.

These incidents always remind me of Rebecca Solnit’s essay “A Rape a minute, a Thousand Corpses a Year.” She lists out examples of rape cases like a gruesome drum beat until you realize it’s an undeniable pattern.

Now playing

I remember this video making the Facebook rounds a few years ago. The story assholes were spreading is this man flashes a group of “Feminist Pride” marchers and they go ape shit on him.
What really happened, was he flashed a march to support victims of rape and sexual assault and some of the marchers were girls as

Brazilian here. Although the article is factually correct, I think it would be useful to expand the information a bit, in order to get more context. Since I already sort of did that with my comment in the article about the Italian woman burnt alive by an ex-boyfriend, here it goes:

Why don’t you just email Gawker or Jezebel about this. One or two of the posts on the main page explain how to do this.

As a Brazilian woman, I’m proud that my people is speaking up, it’s hard to watch the rape culture unfolds at our society for this long. They are mocking us, we’re in a fucking crisis, but this makes me hopeful.

But hey, the Olympics are coming! Everyone ignore the pollution and corruption and complete lack of justice for the poor! The Olympics!

My bf’s step-dad was a piece of shit who’d pick fights with him everyday he was home from like 12-18. My bf got a job at like 12 to be out of the house, and worked at his middle school with their computer system. (This was the early 90s and rural so no one cared much about labor laws and his mom was principle of the

Yes, and that is why people will make so many excuses and stay for so long in an abusive situation. As a society we like our monsters to be very clear cut - you’re a bad person or you’re not. But that’s not how it works.

Ultimately, he’s not really 100% one or the other - an amazing father OR a full-time abuser, but a bit of both; which is what makes domestic abuse so complicated for family members and victims. It’s not just black or white and it’s really difficult to grapple with the fact that someone you love and who loves you (or

Big Foot defends her dad mainly because she was too young to remember when he lived in our home and she was shielded from the bulk of the truth. She only knows what she remembers and what she was told by others.

This is such a sad situation. I know a friend whose father sexually abused children. But she insisted he wasn’t that guy, that sure he watched it but he didn’t do it (not true, but either way it’s participating in abuse) and he was an alcoholic going through a difficult time in his life, etc. Every justification she

It must be very difficult to see your parent being accused of something like this, and it’s normal for her to defend him. Her defense is in no way proof that Depp is innocent, however. I’m a fan of Johnny Depp’s work and it’s a huge bummer to think he could be the kind of guy who hits his wife. I hope it’s not true,
