Notepad++ is free and is light years ahead of windows notepad. Searching and replacing text is easy plus it automatically recognises most text file formats and highlights syntax accordingly; great for quickly editing web pages, xml, and many programming languages.

You might like this, it's by a guy i know for his final year project at uni. Not surprisingly he's employed and working like crazy now
