There are probably a “few” cases of cars being lost to meteor strikes too but it doesn’t factor into my prepurchase calculations. Wondering what “shitty mods” you envision might impact this lol.

The IMS in this car is a totally different design than the naturally aspirated cars. No one I’ve ever heard of has had a failure of that part and I hang out in 996 forums regularly. Compared to the NA cars it’s simply not an issue and modifying the car has NOTHING to do with it. The NA cars simply had a really crappy…
He has upgraded turbo on this car - the X50 package wouldn’t have added anything else except some fairly crappy intercoolers that you would want to swap anyway :-)
Rear spoiler issue is VERY common, lots of solutions exist to fix including a guy building an electric servo system for it. From the ooks of it a GT2 tail was swapped on to solve the problem as those are fixed spoiler. Probably an aftermarket lid and spoiler though and few of them fit perfectly. Paint not too big a…
Spent time growing up there. It’s a small sleepy mill town or was when I knew it. Quiet and friendly overall and yes there are multiple golf courses down in that area...
Or they figure out it’s more durable...
Spend some time in Germany, learn lane discipline. Slower traffic moves right, pass on the left. Right side passes are more dangerous and forcing them endangers others.
Reminds me of a letter to Road and Track a few years ago on this subject. Righteous asshole writes in and says that it’s his God-given right to drive in the left lane if he feels like it and that he can and will continue doing so driving at the speed limit despite angering the drivers around him! In fact he’s been in…
No I’m telling you that self-righteous asshats need to get the hell out of the lane that’s used for passing and where speeds tend to be higher. When you have slower cars encountered by faster drivers the frustration of being forced to pass on the right pisses people off and causes them to take chances they shouldn’t…
Recently, finally, passed in VA. ZERO signs of enforcement ever. ZERO change in the behaviors of asshats.
In my state, VA, you are required to move right when a faster car approaches in the right lane regardless of what speed you’re driving. Enforcement isn’t your concern and differences in speed is what get people KILLED!
Sort of like an awful lot of flags lately <sigh>
You will also notice that the article is discussing a TT model, why bring it up at all?
Horrendous? I don’t think so although the stereos they used sucked badly. Swap the stereo and the interior is pretty pleasant. Leather everywhere or C/F if you want it, good seats, good feel of the road. I drive one pretty often and I don’t find anything not to like about the interior. The 997.2 has some nice…
Oh, do tell! VVT turbocharges, electric P/S pump, Dual MAF. Is that what you call vast? What exactly made it so much better exactly?
996 turbo has pretty much the same drivetrain as the 997.1 for a good bit less cash, the choice is clear for most. The 997.2 with the 3.8 might be more convincing but there were some changes done to that drivetrain that some don’t like <shrug>
The “known defect” you speak of didn’t occur in the Metzger engine which is what this turbo car has as do ALL of the 996 turbo cars. It’s the naturally aspirated ones that have IMS issues. These cars have issues with the coolant pipes that I know of, possibly other issues but not the engine killing IMS.
A spun bearing is just that, a spun bearing. Damaged can be anything from wear to a piece of crud that’s become embedded in the bearing and is slowly wearing a nice groove in your crank. If you’re talking about a spun bearing then say so, damaged != spun.
Had a 72 GT... SBC, Ford 9inch with 4.x gears, non-working tach or speedo. ZOMG it was fast! However the chassis was so light that if a friend had their arm on the window and hand on the frame when I let off the gas it would unwind and pinch their palm lol. I REALLy miss that car and was stupid to sell it. It had rust…
A damaged bearing allows a single mile of use before complete failure? Oh man, please don’t give any more advice on bearings and do some research. you can drive a good bit while the bearing sacrifices itself before it’s truly noticeable.
