My guess is that it wasn’t entirely age. Engineers are kind of notorious for being insufferable know-it-alls and tend to not be the best at customer service when dealing with idiots. While I am pretty sure ageism was a factor, I almost suspect that unless he handicapped his resume, they would put him in the “Way over-qualified” pile. I am surprised he actually got an interview since being over-qualified can be just as bad as being under.
