Has anyone else found that the Google Maps app drains their battery much faster than Apple Maps? I have the 4S and during a drive this weekend it seemed to be using 1% for every 3-4 minutes of use.

I've always done this with regular cans. Call 'em "speed holes." Easiest way to do it is to pop off the tab, fold it in half, and then use the point to puncture top ridge of the side of the can.
