Exactly. Part of it is because condemning him would be condemning themselves and their base, and part of it is because admitting Trump is bad would give Democrats a never ending stream of attack ads for the next 2-3 elections and further split the party.

Agreed, as a resident who actually lives on the Avenue of Second Place Trophies (and one terribly rendered Arthur Ashe monument), I know the counter protest would have been massive. Especially with school in session.

A rally in support of the confederate monuments in Richmond, which was supposed to be Sept 16th (Lee’s birthday), has been cancelled.
