These things are en mass at rental car lots, even there they can’t even compete. 

I think it is more that if the middle class is going to drop 40k on a car, it is going to be an all round great car that functions well, like the Outback. 

My Subaru Forester does a facial scan every time I get in to adjust my settings. I wonder if in the future the it could scan my face like an iPhone to start the car

Local dealer here plays ads non stop about this being a better and cheaper alternative to the Outback.  Lucky for Subaru, this didn’t even impact their sales

Doubtful. Subaru has replaced CVTs with 180k miles on them under the extended warranty.  Also, talk to Prius owners that are seeing north of 2-300,000 miles on their CVTs
