I didn’t see any mention of the large number of people who use the health care system but pay absolutely nothing. That has to take a toll on the prices the rest of us pay.

You can have your paycheck direct deposited into as many counts as you want. (at least I can). I opened an account at a bank I don’t normally use. Each week a little money goes into that account. I don’t see it and if I want access to it, I have to actually go to the bank and withdraw. It’s an easy way to save some…

I’m sure there is some extreme example somewhere, ie someone who could not qualify for term, but for 99.9% of the population I think they are ridiculous. We can agree to disagree... :)

I’ll retract my initial statement as too definitive. :). I have heard enough bad stories though that I would still be hard pressed to ever put my money in an annuity. Maybe I’ll reconsider if I reach the point where I max out on 401k and Roth IRA. That’s a good problem to have.

I appreciate the thoughtful reply. My (extremely simplified) understanding of how they work is... I invest money into an annuity, the company invests the money, pays me some of the returns and keeps the rest. I could have invested in the same mutual funds, index funds, bonds ect and kept the entire return and my money…

Can you give me an example why you would recommend an annuity? Generally I think they are horrible products, but you know more about them then I do (sincere) so I’m curious.

As soon as your financial planner starts talking about annuities or whole life insurance, run like the wind and don’t look back.

Good luck to Apple if they are going to try to make sure Siri does not offend anyone ever. Perhaps Siri is not the best resource for serious situations.
