Your friend is likely correct. I'm 7 years older than you but was still young when Nirvana became popular in '91. However, I had grown up hearing all 80s music prior, it was all I knew, hair metal, new wave, Wilson Phillips (gag) and a smattering of junky pop as always exists (Debbie Gibson, New Kids on the Block etc.)
