Ive had the timing chain break on a few pushrod GM engines and it has never damaged the engine. Trailer it back to the shop and throw on a $30 timing chain, good to go. Pushrod V8’s are significantly easier to work on than a V8 with overhead cams. Also those OHC engines tend to be interference so if your timing chain/belt breaks you can kiss your engine goodbye.
