The Didact’s whole deal (where he’s from, what he’s doing, why he’s doing it) was spelled out twice in the campaign (and a third time in in-game terminals), this idea that you need to read books to understand Halo 4 has never been true. There’s a hell of a lot of backstory out there but it’s not essential.
