For a low-content W220, I suggest looking at an E430. Same engine as an S430, tighter footprint, less fancypants stuff to fail.

The plus and minus on the shifter aren’t a manual mode. They limit the range of gears. The car will still up and downshift within that range. The 03+ AMG models had a manual mode, in which the gear selected was held until redline.
