This same author wrote about how great the movie is. It doesn’t mean he can’t be disappointed that, in the 20-something big budget super-hero movies that have come out since X-Men 1 there have been zero openly gay characters. Its not about *this* movie. It’s a bigger conversation. If it bothers you, don’t join in.

Yeah, the problem is intolerant audiences, not Marvel. How do people not get that?

They did not “miss” an “opportunity” at LGBTQ representation. Marvel/Disney remains absolutely convinced that openly showing any kind of non-heterosexual romance will be a “controversy” that will have their bread and butter demographic (midwestern crackers) screaming bloody murder and boycotting their properties. That cut scene actually sounds like a great way to flesh out characters that might otherwise not be fleshed out. And easy, too — it sounds like it’s about a thirty second scene.

One of the few advantages of living in the rural Northeast is that the little duplex screen in my town almost always gets the big sci-fi/action flicks and almost never sells out.

My biggest fear is that we’ll open the doors wide open and allow everyone to do whatever they want, and it’ll still be a male-dominated field simply because more men want to do it. 7% is bullshit, but, frankly, so is 50%. And not because women can’t or won’t do it, but because that’s just not how life works out. It’s

I didn’t mean to imply you said anything. Sorry about that. Tone gets lost in text.

Because no matter how much we want it, if the desire at the base just isn’t there, then it’s just a problem with no solution.

So a best director award shouldn’t go to the best director? Having a different set of rules for women is the wrong way to go. When a woman does do the best directorial job of the year and wins the award, people would then say she only got it because of her gender.

It’s on my (very long) list. Having two kids under 7 doesn’t leave much time for adult programming. I had to watch Breaking Bad mostly on my phone at night.

But then you have people who actively denied the Holocaust, Jews that aided the Nazis, pardoning Nazis in exchange for research or work, benefiting from Nazi research done on living people, and so on.

That is true. Now everyone’s a potential victim.

Even if you don’t agree that the film warranted best director consideration in a vacuum, sometimes consideration for these awards is given symbolically, and the fact that a big-budget, action/comic-book movie starred a female protagonist and was directed by a woman, and, in the wider context, bucked the conventional

But now I know to expect pee coffee. Which, we can all agree, is the best surprise.

Yes, I agree a woman should’ve been nominated (and won, frankly), but not Jenkins.

Well, thanks for spoiling Fargo. I guess I’ll never watch it now.

But what’s the ultimate reason for lack of female directors

Yeah, I’ll give you that for sure. Mainly because Ares was miscast like no other.

The issue is lack of female directors, and lack of projects given to them by the studios. The lack of nominations and therefore awards is a symptom, treating symptoms makes you feel better but it doesn’t get to the underlying issues. Which is the massive power imbalance in Hollywood between the genders, causing these
