I am using ubuntu with cinnamon (Linux mint's interface) installed on it. You don't have to switch to another distro just for a desktop manager and linux mint is ubuntu anyway.

I use freecommander for organizing my text based notes. pressing ctrl+q opens up quick view on right sight while file list is on left side. I can choose several programs to open text files, but mostly I prefer writemonkey, and second notepad++. I use a netbook which comes with a keyboard.
