I had a great relationship with my mother. My paternal grandmother .... not so much. I have horror stories about her like some of the others have about their own mothers. It certainly explains why my father is the way he is.

I get the historical connotation, but I haven't heard the word used that way since I was a kid in the 70's. Even then I heard it far less than the other word. As for that word, it isn't part of my vocabulary for many reasons.

Children aren't born with manners, nor do they come with instruction manuals. What works for one, may not work for the other, so you figure it out together. I treat some adults this way. It works wonders.
