That’s the exact word.
This is great news. That show is a delight.
She's the Betsy DeVos of gymnastics.
People are asking what this means for #MeToo. It means it’s doing its job.
This doesn’t surprise me. Cycles of abuse are self-perpetuating. I’m surprised more people aren’t pointing out how distressingly similar the details of this assault are to her allegation against Weinstein: the grooming and isolating of the victim, providing alcohol before attacking etc. It’s infuriating to think…
Take your goddam star and get outta here. 😋
Bonus points for her using the classic “I didn’t do any of that!...ok I did, but (person) was totally into it at the time and only decided to complain now because I wouldn’t do (some thing).” defense.
We don’t know all of the facts, but based on what we do know, Zizek, Butler, Spivak and other signers of the “support” letter should be ashamed of themselves for trying to justify the type of behavior they have spent their professional lives condemning.
“What Are We to Make of the Case of Scholar Avital Ronell?”
Am I the only one disturbed that nearly the entire first half of this article is made up of supportive quotes by friends and colleagues of the alleged abuser, including claims the alleged victim is lying, and his testimony is buried near the bottom? Why isn’t his story centered in this article? There is NOTHING about…
It’s pretty obvious what we should make of this case, even if Jezebel staff can’t quite bring themselves to admit it. It is heartening, however, to see that many commentators are willing to dispense with the pages of obfuscatory waffle in favour of clear-eyed judgments.
Very true, but let’s play devil’s advocate and assume Honeyfoot’s account of this guy is spot on, and he’s just a creep. So what? Not all abuse victims are pleasant people. It isn’t just the saintly who get abused. Even bullies can be assaulted.
How is that different than any other shitty defense-of-abuser letter?
“What Are We to Make of the Case of Scholar Avital Ronell?”
“It’s not the same thing to accuse a male person in power versus accusing a woman. It’s just not the same thing, because we’ve got a culture and a very long history in which males were dominant and abusing their power.”
This is a weird fucking case.
Exactly. I read somewhere that she is referred to as “a philosophical superstar” in the academia. My automatic reaction was that anyone called that has about 85% chance of being guilty of sexual harassment, or at least of some kind of abuse of power (for male superstars, probably 99% chance).
Many of the male sexual harassers seem like desperate, dirty old men. Doesn’t make it any less harassment.
SPICE FORCE!
