That’s a valid point. I can rephrase: they believe that issues such as validating their racism (and their opposition to abortion) are more important to them, than the fact that they are otherwise voting against their own self-interests.

You often see those attitudes in posts on the former Gawker websites, in public as well as in the grays.

Giving money away is part of the neoliberal compromise. Since having the government give money directly away to, for example, arts organizations, is considered bad by small-government (and Scroogian types), the compromise is that charitable contributions are deductible. I stopped drinking milk when I was young. I am not officially lactose intolerant, but I also find that milk makes my innards uncomfortable. Plus, I just don’t care for it. I love ice cream, I do enjoy many cheeses, and I ate greek yogurt for breakfast this morning, so I do partake of many milk products.
