Water heaters have a special additional problem: mineral buildup (scale) inside the tank and on the anode. Unless your source for the heater is naturally completely demineralized or routing through a softener, you will develop a very thick insulating coating around the heating elements severely reducing efficiency.

I agree completely - I’ve had too many people tell themselves that by signing up for 15 years it will give them financial discipline. Unfortunately, when a financial downturn (job, illness, car repair) strikes their monthly cashflow is to tight to handle it easily.
