You can download setup files (they’re called .debs) and install them. The problem with non-package manager installs on linux *and* windows is that it’s easy to to be missing additional libraries or be on the wrong version, resulting in weird errors (“dll hell” anyone?).
Rhythmbox works well for managing music on ipods/iphones, but you definitely need access to an itunes on a vm if you need the whole apple life.
