It is just an expansion into Google Home products. You could do this on the phone for a while but now you can tell your Google Home and then it syncs up with your phone to give you the reminder at the location.

The update allows you to ask a Google home for a location based reminder. The reminder will appear on your device when near the requested location. You are right it has worked on device for a while but not for the google home.
