As a Latino, I find this whole “latinx” thing a cultural encroachment of the dominate Anglo culture attempting to enforce one of its linguistic constructs on another culture. It’s insulting and patronizing.

Got it :) I just think that we as Society would all be better off seriously discussing these things instead of using exaggeration in respective echo chambers often simply to attract more advertising revenue.

But the guy is married to an Asian woman...

Fuck you.

Thank you for a good laugh.

People do realize that everything in Spanish has a gender, right? So do we now have to say Lx Angeles and Sanx Franciscx?

“We can’t say that Asians are more successful because they work harder, are genetically superior, or whatever”

Assuming there is strong empirical support then why wouldn’t we be able to say it?

Yes, but then...who doesn’t?

I didn’t think you were that new. Gizmodo’s battles with 4chan/Reddit go back a decade or more.

“Disgusting insectoids” is mine.

Thanks, but if it’s pronounced Latinex, why not just spell it that way?

For me, the most damaging aspect is when other minorities dismiss racism against Asian Americans with whataboutism arguments.

DoI have to refer to my girlfriend as a Filipinx in conversation now too?

I think the Asian “model minority” thing comes from the East Asian obsession with rigorous schooling and “work ethic” — by which I mean tormenting your kids to the point of stress-related disorders and then continuing that into adulthood by locking them into their fates around elementary school, but y’know. Point

So what exactly is the argument for Asians increased success if it’s not their culture? Are we just denying the gap exists?

I also have a dumb question — what happened to “Hispanic?” That seemed more gender-neutral than Latino or Latina or even Latinx (which I’m not sure how to pronounce), but it seems to have fallen out of fashion?

All he had to do was say “present” and then tell the judge that he wished to participate in the proceedings in Hawaiian.

You can certainly jail someone for refusing to cooperate with a court proceeding. If he didn’t speak English, that would be one thing. But he does, and is just trying to gain publicity for his cause.

The judge should have asked him to conduct his case in Hawaiian if he wants but then compel him to interpret for himself. If he was not an expert in the language, he should be appointed a translator, but since he is an expert, it seems an unnecessary cost to the court. Arresting him for speaking Hawaiian is a total

Maybe learn to speak the language
