I once nailed a ground speed of 180 knots in a Cessna 172. This was about a 65 knot tailwind, meaning I could have turned around and flown “backwards” with my flaps down. Considering it was winter, night, and such a maneuver would have been insanely risky, I did not. But I could have!

Oh yeah, I left a lot out of the flight planning there, just giving the (excuse the expression) 30,000 foot view.
