Design Theory on youtube had a good video recently on the markup of luxury brands. It’s 37 minutes and worth the full watch, but the part from 3:47 talks to exclusivity and brands making customers jump through hoops. Feels relevant to the article:

Arguably an automatic suits the nature of this car better, as it is more of a boulevard cruiser than a sports car, but certainly unique enough that it adds value for someone who really wants a manual XJ-S.
