The violence in the movie is utterly jarring. It’s not just over the top, it’s B-movie over the top. “Struck by a car” translates to “body is torn in half and blood sprays everywhere” over the top.

Yep! Even in the first episode, when he explains his intentions to Ryuk, Light agrees that Ryuk is right in saying that if he cleansed the world of injustice he’d be the only bad person left. But that it’s worth it to sacrifice himself for his perfect world.

For what it’s worth, you aren’t really SUPPOSED to like Light. He’s not an anti-hero, and you’re absolutely supposed to be rooting against him, no matter what a lot of the fandom says.
