I sorta hated it. Everything in India before they got on the ship was twee as fuck, and the whole kid-alone-in-the-middle-of-the-ocean-with-a-tiger situation never seems as serious as it ought to. Plus (to crib from someone on Twitter), the movie looks like a series of Windows 95 wallpapers.

James Gray's immigrant period piece starring Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Renner, and Joaquin Phoenix is my most anticipated for 2013. The title keeps changing, so I don't know what it's called this week, but hopefully they'll go back to "Lowlife," the original title. I'm been sort of lukewarm on Gray in the past, but I'm

It appears that the younger and more Hollywood-handsome the actor is, the less dwarf makeup he's wearing. I know Kili is supposed to be younger than the rest of them, but come on, he just looks like a regular guy!

Maybe they look different in the context of the film, but from the trailers and the clips, the sets are a little cheap-looking. Like they're redecorated sets from a BBC period drama. Not that there's anything wrong with BBC drama, but you expect a lot more from a big-budget movie, right?

But @avclub-e57dbebc740250d2c4a370cf6ccb35f0:disqus, the actors are singing! I mean, the actors are actually singing! Out loud! For a musical! Isn't that the most miraculous thing you've ever heard? I don't know how they pulled it off! Truly the artistic feat of the century!

The problem there is that, in Hollywood's mind, there's only room for one foreign-language film a year. And this year, that movie is "Amour." All others need not apply, no matter how great (ahemHolyMotorsahem) they are.
