I always recommend to my consulting clients to use a VPN for everything, one with a proven “no log” policy. I use one myself for everything.

That’s technically true, but almost universally companies have not agreed to turn over that information without a court order, and sometimes fight those. Apple and Amazon or two good examples of that. If companies start freely turning over private customer information, they know how quickly they will lose business. 

In all honesty, I don’t see that being an issue. Police will still have to get a warrant for that information, just as they have to get warrants for camera footage, Alexa conversations, phone records, etc.

We are going to have less privacy with more “smart” devices and vehicles, but existing privacy laws still apply.…
