Can't believe I'm the first one to recommend the Saab 900 Enduro from Australia.

Alpha Centauri is quite possibly the best 4x strategy game ever. Mechanically it's not much different than a Civ game, but it nailed mood and managed to weave a story into the game, which is unlike anything Civ has been able to do.

I still play Alpha Centauri. None of the actual Civ games have come close in terms of fun for me, though Civ 5 was decent. I am tentatively excited to try this one though.
