I haven't seen this one- sounds like I should. In "Yuma", he plays a somewhat sympathetic heavy, and tips too far towards "sympathetic".

I thought that Glenn Ford was the worst thing about 3:10 to Yuma. He just couldn't do heavy for the life of him- too nice a guy.

Many years ago, I read Robert Graves' translation, so I don't know if that's what you mean by "proper"- but, that was plenty violent, entrails spilling left and right.
