Even though you could classify it as more of a thriller, I would add Green Room. It's certainly a horrifying situation to be in and it packs some gruesome gore effects as well.

Haha, while reading the first paragraph of your post, I immediately thought of Mother!. Me and my wife enjoyed seeing that in the theater, bit your right that it would difficult to watch again. Another good example would be Requiem for a Dream.
