I’m going to throw out one other tip that any Bethesda RPG veteran should already know: your first perk should be the one that allows you to fast travel while encumbered. It is and has always been a lifesaver for the “loot everything” players like me. :)
After a half-dozen Bethesda games with the same lockpick mechanic, I have gotten so good at it that I don’t hesitate to pick locks above my level from the get-go. It’s not abuse if you’re used to controlling game’s camera manually. I don’t think I’ve ever allowed a game to control the viewpoint if manual controls are available, and this was no exception.
