Wait for the 1.53 patch (or grab 1.52.1 now if you’re on PC), they’re still fixing issues with legacy saves but most are resolved now. 1.51 was a big leap in that direction, 1.52.1 fixes the reclaim your base quest for legacy players.

There’s nothing you “should” be doing, it’s completely open-ended. That said, there are several metagames/ storylines if you want a more directed experience: the Atlas Path, the Artemus Quests, recruiting specialists for your base unlocks more sidequests, and even getting to the center of the galaxy has an outcome.
