This. But it’s not just a shame, it’s infuriating. The whole point of Paper Mario was that it was a Mario Story. Instead of going right and murdering all the generic Goombas in your way, you actually went to a Goomba Village and there was a family of Goombas, with unique names, appearances and personalities. The fact

Apparently it’s a combination of the drastic negative feedback to the mere presence of story in Super Paper Mario and Super Mario Galaxy (via the Club Nintendo surveys) and how massively successful New Super Mario Bros. Wii was.

This is exactly what it means.  It was a bizarre reaction to Club Nintendo surveys for Super Paper Mario(which the story and characters just simply weren't as good as previous games).  It's sad cuz that was literally the best part of the first 2 Paper Mario games.

yeah they can, but we cant reasonably expect people to heed such a request here. in japan they are much more well-behaved and polite. not saying there arent assholes, but there arent nearly as many.

This is a great example why indie and fan games often seam to be more creative. The bigger the corporation the more rules they follow. Brand recognition is of course important, but it should never impact the creative vision of video games... especially with games that are not part of one single canon.

It’s truly mind-boggling, especially when the “modified” versions of existing Mario enemies are among the things people are most excited for with each new entry in the series.

They may just want to prevent the franchise from getting so bloated that people who miss a few games no longer know who many of the characters are. Its like they want the Mario universe to always be something you recognize, no matter how long you’ve been away from gaming. Not defending, but that may be the reasoning

The franchise has grown so big at this point that keeping everything artistically in the same “universe” has become a bigger problem than a concept of story canon. Continually doing brand new character designs that depart significantly from those already in existence could eventually yield games that just don’t seem

Why would they put this limit on?

Then just stop developing the whole franchise. Paper Mario was so great because we got original characters that were based on species found in the Mario universe and that had therefore their own unique design.

And in Japan people are burning down buildings because they think they were plagiarized. Not as different as you think.

People here are brandishing guns and throwing tantrums when private businesses ask them not to enter their property without masks.

It is nice they can even feel comfortable making such a public request. Sadly in America it would be seen as a violation of constitutional rights and challenged all day, every step, every day.

Hey. Not someone. Nintendo's President himself ;)

it’s true! The terms of the Nintendo / Atari partnership deal specified that Atari would pay royalties for every AVS (the then-title of the worldwide Famicom version) sold, but Atari would have free reign to market and brand it as their own.

The deal was undone, of all things, by the COLECO’s Adam

Great interview. There are a few interesting things here, but I think my favourite part is how much it humanises Yamauchi. I always got the impression he was a fierce, hard person, but learning he used to get drunk, call one of his employees, and tell him to make shit is hilarious.

I studied at Ritsumeikan for a bit and I never knew they had a game development program! Really interesting interview!

Wow.  Really fascinating stuff!  Who knew the color scheme was based on just a scarf someone liked?
