It’s a big universe. Just go to the next planet. By the time you run out of planets, new, delicious species will have evolved on the first one.

I like the suggestion I read many years ago that the aliens would use human hair for fashion wear, so the dropped down once every year, sheared our heads and then left again. Only thing they cared about was that no one cut their hair between visits, otherwise we could do what we wanted. Harmless and insulting at the…
Money will be no problem. They just have to start a youtube-channel and watch the money roll in.
That trailer was at least as much Star Wars as it was Foundation.
Good writers know their strengths and weaknesses, or find an editor who does. If you are good at inventing futuristic technology, by all means describe your clever idea for how space travel works in your book, if not, just have them enter the spaceship and press “start”. Same with scenery, dialogue, plot etc.
I think a species that can expand to a large number of stars is more or less guaranteed to survive. Not as one species, but the different parts will diverge, get different cultures, over time evolve into entirely different different species. Disaster may fall upon some planets, but others will survive.
Kid is still mortal and can’t fly. Besides, do you know how long it takes for a bat to cross the Atlantic, or wherever they are going? Planes are much faster.
I really wonder if and how they will include the long episode in the diner. That was horrifying enough in a comic book, on screen it will be much worse.
A predator usually snatch a few eggs and leaves. If the birds think the drone is a predator they might have waited for it to leave, which never happened.
But I can still let the drone remain on my property, lay in ambush and shoot any tresspasser who tries to pick it up, right? 2:nd amendment, stand your ground, castle doctrine etc :-)
If any republican objects to consider it a crime you can always call it abortion.
What about radiation? No atmosphere, no van Allen belts. I think a lunar base where people stay for any length of time will have to be below the surface.
It could be a triple bluff. Killing Weasel off just because it’s so obvious that he ought to die that people will assume he will actually survive”. And by the way I replaced the goblet while your back was turned.
I think we can prepare by thinking real hard about animal rights. If can figure out a more just way of dealing with being less intelligent than us, that may help figuring out how to create a moral framework covering beings more intelligent than us as well.
That’s where examples like the paperclip factory comes in. It is told to create paperclips and it will do it’s best to convert as much as it can of the universe into paperclips, but apart from that it’s mindless, has no purpose, no idea what paperclips are good for. That’s considerably worse than humanity.
Obviously no superintelligence would be as obvious as in your examples. It would make suggestions that seems perfectly reasonable to the people who control it. Look at how humans gain power despite being easy to kill with a bullet.
Does those problem involve creating any physical equipment? In that case how can you make sure there isn’t some hidden functions in there that are just too subtle for us to notice? To be absolutely sure the AI can’t use any solutions it provide to get out you will be extremely limited in the kind of problems you ask…
One plausible scenario is that the AI would be programmed not to kill humans, but would not have been given instructions in sufficient detail to make sure there are enough resources available for us to stay alive either. Hunting for power it may cover the surface with solar cells, too bad about all the farmland. Mass…
Didn’t ‘Alien vs. Predator’ claim that predators had been using Earth as a hunting ground for a very long time? Or has that been retconned in the reboot?
I get it that some scenes can be painful to make to look realistic, but what about planning and rehearsing so you don’t have to spend 10 hours strapped down to make a 1,5 minute scene? This seems just incompetent apart from unpleasant.
