So do my fiancée and I.

I agree. Love Mulaney's stand-up and George St. Geegland, but his own show was such a disappointment. It reminds me of When the Whistle Blows on Extras, but a Seinfeld knock-off instead of a working class LCD British comedy.
Although Show Us Your Songs was singled out as the weak link sketch, the song/performance of "Pleep Ploop" by Angela MacKenzie-ng deserves a rewatch or two, as it gets way funnier for some reason. I love it.
I love Polvo, for sure, but saying Unwound "isn't even good enough to wipe the shit from [their] ass" is kind of koo-koo crazy, my friend.
Haha. The user "Unwound" even hates on Unwound fans for not being hardcore Unwound enough. He really thinks you mentioned "Corpse Pose" because it's their "most popular song" (they have popular songs??) and you don't really know their catalog like a REAL fan does. Haha…. oh shit, man. *shaking head*
I totally agree here. Fugazi had an interesting career arc and subsequent albums (starting with In on the Killtaker) really got away from the bullying tone of the Repeater-era (and its bookmark releases). They were my favorite band in high school and are still a huge inspiration musically and ethically.
Elastica, seriously?? A band that got sued for ripping of a Wire riff wholesale, only put out one decent album (out of two) the entire decade, and fell apart due to rampant drug addiction and dysfunction?
Love "The World Is Flat"…. Challenge for a Civilized Society doesn't get enough love. Those songs are so fun to play on guitar. Time to listen to "Lifetime Achievement Award" again (the theme song for this article if there ever was one).
You could make an argument for GBV. At least you present a valid and interesting alternative instead of just saying "Some terrible noisy band I've never heard of is the Best Band of the 90's!? I mean, come ON!"
One can only hope.
"Isn't it ironic…. dontcha think?"
"Well… that's like, your opinion…man." - The Dude
The hyperbole is ironic, considering not many people have even heard/heard of Unwound. To Jason, the "Best Band of the 90's" is one that managed to make these amazing records and tour extensively, all under the mainstream radar and without support from traditional media outlets.
Also, there's the fact that your comment is, in fact, a severely uninformed opinion posing as fact, in fact.
Nah, it just means Jason forgot to squeeze it in. I have a hard time choosing an absolute favorite, because I love all the Unwound KRS albums for different reasons. When pressed, I always say New Plastic Ideas is my favorite, but The Future of What and Repetition are damn near perfect and a bit more progressive. …
PS - Sara Lund is one of the best Indie/Post-Hardcore/whatever drummers of all time… without a doubt. Hyperbolic this ain't.
I like your point about Unwound being a cross-section of all the dominant Alternative Rock sub-genres of the decade. They were like an accessible Post-Hardcore/Screamo band, but also an oblique, noisy and experimental Indie Rock unit; they were able to straddle these pigeon holes while transcending them.
