Funnily enough I used to work in IT at the BBC before I got into development, and I used to roll my eyes at the devs who’d call up demanding to circumvent the usual corporate restrictions or ask for local admin rights (always denied). Only now do I understand their pain!

Christ. I’m a developer and I simply couldn’t work without local admin rights; if I found myself in a job where I couldn’t install whatever tools I saw fit I’d start looking for the next gig right away! Perhaps it depends on the kind of dev work you’re doing, though.
