Their advantage is their head start, which might also be a disadvantage. If they can get to serious sales numbers, before anyone else has a viable option over their car, they can get as big as BMW, Audi, or Mercedes eventually.

The thing a self driving car may not be able to cope with would be a pedestrian bolting out into the street for no apparent reason. Does the car stop? Does the car veer off course? Does the car continue along its intended course? If it veers, will it hit something else? Can it be expected to compute all those…

Car and Driver actually had a good take on this: what do people do when they panic? They continue driving into whatever the car was pointed at when they started panicking. So autonomous cars only have to do better than that...which shouldn’t be that difficult.
