There has been no good reason for the rushed ending to the show.  There are explanations:  No more books to base the story on;  the actors wanted out after 8 years, the costs of production were too high.   They had literally 50 sub plots to wrap up over 13 episodes.  It did not work out well.

Myles - you hit the nail on the head.  The writers had too, too many subplots to have it all make sense.  Clearly, 13 episodes, to wrap up the series was not close to being enough.
