@Phil Racicot: In all due respect to your old car, with its huge engine can get by with very high (numerically lower) gearing due to the engine's prodigious torque. Cruising RPM is probably around 1700-2200.

@Rupunzell: The funny thing is, there are plenty of regulations on the books today that should have prevented this. However, this sounds like a mechanical problem (BOP failure) and no amount of regulations can prevent mechanical problems.
