Dunking just takes a high amount of athleticism but not a whole lot of specific basketball skill. hitting a home run not only requires strength, but the technique and skill that a person just picking up a bat won’t have. Just about anyone can jump with a ball, few would have a good swing the first time.

If what I heard is correct, this is a response to pretty poor sportsmanship from the opposing team. I won’t judge which is worse, but I don’t think it’s the best response to reward the other team who had didn’t show quite as bad sportsmanship.
