When I was at Ford there was actually something like this in development. There would be sensors that could detect and subsequently warn you if there is something approaching before you open your door.

I was once temporarily disabled for four months (military injury, I was in the Navy and subsequently discharged because of it). I totally agree with your comment. Being disabled is hugely inconvenient and society should learn to be more patient and understanding towards people with disabilities.
I just came here to say, that is just about the scariest thing I’ve read in a long while. Mainly because it can pretty much happen to any of us.
Aside from the manual point that some have brought up, I think it’s also for intuitiveness. It’s easier and quicker to use the lever to shift from P to R to D and back without looking since so many are used to it now.
