Even if the artist/writer/etc tried to make a work apolitical... they have no control over what interpretions the consumer/player/reader/viewer/etc brings with them.

I can see that. As one reviewer said it’s like “the biggest fan-film ever”. While most of the characters weren’t developed outside of how they were crucial for the plot, the different look at the universe and reestablishing the “look” were kinda important for the new fans.

Iirc, the comics show the area much more built up. I truly doubt there’s a big rock quarry so close to the real city of Alexandria that would match the TV version either.
