Really what it was is a clever way for George to tell more of the history of Westeros without making another history book. The first Novella is entertaining, but I got stuck on the 2nd one.
I think it makes all the sense in the world for Game of Thrones to be spun off. I would be very interested in seeing the Targaryen conquest of Westoros, which would give the show runners a little leeway as the bones of a story are there, but not as much detail.
